Review of “On Wings of Devotion” by Roseanna M. White

First off, let me say I truly enjoy Roseanna M. White’s books! Every character she creates is unique and can carry their own stories well. She gives them great backstories and by the end of each book, her characters are better people because of what they go through.

All in all, this was a great story. It developed at an average pace, and each protagonist had his/her own baggage and past events to deal with. Eventually, they come to terms with their own short comings by helping each other understand that they are loved despite how they may appear to everyone else around them. This reminded me slightly of a “Beauty and the Beast” type story, except each of the protagonists had a “beast” quality to reckon with, and each saw the “beauty” quality in the other.

Some people say you can tell how you feel about a story by the way you react to the book itself. What I mean by that is this: did you hug the book when you finished it, or did you want to throw it at a wall? (Haha, I’m not that aggressive with my books, I promise) This book didn’t make me want to hug it or throw it. I just kind of tossed it to the side.

Don’t read me wrong, I liked the book. I liked the character development and the overall story. I think my favorite aspect of it was how Ara saw past Phillip’s facade by listening to the voice of the Lord and praying for him; she saw he was hurting and in desperate need of the Lord.

What I didn’t like was the climax. It felt very rushed, and comparing it to the first book in the series, it was a little lack-luster. I think it contained all the elements of an impactful ending, it just lost something in the delivery. This is completely my opinion, and I respect the fact not everyone will agree with it. I am, however, psyched to read the final installment in the Codebreakers series! I hope the story will be wrapped up with a nice little bow on top! Thanks for supporting my blog, and happy reading!

    1. Great question! I think I would compare this story to a caramel macchiato. It was sweet for the most part, but kind of ended flat. Like a caramel macchiato, I enjoyed it but I wasn’t too upset when it was finished. Thanks for the comment!
