What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Christmas? Go on–take a minute to consider…
Most probably think of the Nativity story; many think of Santa Claus; and sadly, too many people only have negative thoughts or feelings associated with Christmas. Our emotions often shape our perspectives, especially around the holidays–from the sober gratefulness of Thanksgiving, followed by the rejoicing of the birth of our Savior at Christmas, and finally to the bittersweet knowledge of the passage of time coupled with the excitement of a fresh start at New Year’s.
When I think of Christmas, the first thing that comes to my mind is the birth of Christ; but what accompanies this is a deep sense of joy. My joy is from celebrating the Nativity of course, but it also emerges from Christmas traditions and memories I hold dear. There’s a hopeful excitement that new wonders await and new memories will be made. Creating a memory when witnessing the joy on a loved one’s face as they open the gift you picked especially for them is priceless!
What Christmas activities bring joy to you? For example, my sister loves ice skating (I enjoy it for her sake–I’m no athlete!), whereas our mom prefers relaxing with the family by watching a Christmas movie. One of my favorites has been, and probably always will be, decorating the Christmas tree. It is a special time as a family when we share memories connected to each ornament while eating holiday treats and listening to music.
Another activity that brings joy is writing Christmas cards. It’s a little old-fashioned, but that’s what makes it special! My sister and I give cards to friends and coworkers every year, and we look forward to sharing the joy of Christ to those around us in this way.
I pray you will find ways to bring joy to those God has placed in your life! Merry Christmas! โค๏ธ๐
