Set in Texas 1894, Heart on the Line is the second novel in the series Ladies of Harper’s Station. It follows the story of Grace Mallory, a telegrapher who has found solace and a hiding place in the women’s colony of Harper Station.
When Grace’s father is murdered for information he discovered, Grace takes this secret with her hoping that her father’s killer won’t discover her whereabouts. But after hiding for almost a year, Grace longs for a normal life and perhaps even a suitor like two of her friends at Harper’s Station have found. Not only that, but she has yet to discover the information her father concealed in a stack of books. When danger threatens to steal all she holds dear, who can she trust to help her puzzle out the mystery her father died for without putting those she loves in jeopardy?
Amos Bledsoe has always been different. He prefers bicycles to horses, and private conversations over the telegraph wire to social gatherings. He enjoys the company and conversations of the mysterious telegrapher Ms. G, so much so that Amos hopes he has finally found the woman God intends for him. But when he intercepts a message that implies a threatening danger to Grace, Amos must gather up the courage to come out of his shell and be the hero she needs.
This is my first time reading a book by this author and I loved it! She smoothly transitioned from a sweet and simple love story, to an intense and thrilling mystery. I have read Western novels before, but the stories never held my attention. The style of this story was much different! Witemeyer writes with a sense of humor, and her characters in this novel are well written and believable. I particularly enjoyed how Witemeyer interweaves Scripture and Christian values throughout the story. At the most perilous point of the story, it is Grace Mallory’s dependence on God and His Word that gives her the strength to press on and face her greatest enemy.
This was an inspirational and fun read! I’ve added it to my “Favorites” shelf on Goodreads.
