Review of “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice: the name itself evokes exactly what the story is about. The pride and prejudice of certain classes in early 19th-century England is on display in this well known classic, and it does not disappoint. I admit when I started this book, my expectations weren’t very high. I really didn’t want to be disappointed, but at the same time, I wondered to myself Why all the hype? Could it really be as great as everyone says? I want to also make it known that I’m very impatient when I start reading a new book. It takes me a little bit to really sink my teeth into a new story, but I’m getting better at waiting for the characters to realize the obvious. So without further hesitation, I dove right in.

I relate to Elizabeth Bennet in many ways, in her way of thinking and sometimes her overthinking. So when Mr. Darcy came on the scene, I was honestly as unimpressed by him as Elizabeth. I really didn’t like him until halfway through the book, which is about the same time that Elizabeth’s opinion of Mr. Darcy changes as well. I suppose with any great author, if they can convince the reader to relate to the protagonist in their story, then they have won over the reader.

I’m not trying to judge this classic (how could I?); this is simply an opinion piece based on my reading preferences. I thoroughly enjoyed Pride and Prejudice. The story and the characters had so many layers, I’m not sure where to even begin! The well paced development of Mr. Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s relationship, and the fact that they enrich each other’s lives and make the other a better person is like the perfect cup of pumpkin spice latte on a crisp autumn day. The way the story itself is written, with it’s classical wording and even how Austen herself speaks in a way through her characters, is enthralling.

It may have a stereotype around it for being one of the most beloved romances of all time, but at the risk of sounding cliche, I agree with many other readers before me. This is not a classic that should be overlooked, nor only read for those who prefer this genre of books. There are many hidden gems in this story that can be found if the reader keeps digging deeper.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, and happy reading!
