It’s actually been a year since I read this book, but it has left and impression on me. “The Number of Love” is the first in a new series of books by Roseanna M. White called “The Codebreakers.” It takes place in London during World War I in the perspective of the occupants of top secret Room 40. Room 40, probably best known for it’s decoding of the Zimmermann Telegram in January of 1917, was the British center of cryptanalysis and intercepted many telegrams from Germany during the war.
The story itself follows the life of the fictional Margot De Wilde, a codebreaker at Room 40 with an unconventional love of numbers. But her life is turned upside down when she loses the one person she loves more than her numbers, and almost loses her faith in the process. When unexpected trials arise and a secret plot is uncovered, Margot must rely on more than just her numbers; and she must recognize that sometimes God can do His best work when life seems at it’s worst.
I very much enjoyed this book. I thought the character development went at a great pace, and the two protagonists had real chemistry. The way in which the author progressed the lives of the side characters and then included them as a crucial part of the story was fantastic. I related to Margot in many ways, being prolific with numbers myself; but it was in the development of her relationship with the Lord that I found the most enjoyment. I loved the relationship between Margot and her love interest Drake, and how patient he was with Margot throughout the book. He understood when she needed some space, supported her seemingly unachievable goals, and always pointed her back to putting her trust in the Lord. I will probably read this book again very soon, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!
